Specialty Clinic: Women in the Backcountry

Women play an important role in the dynamics of the backcountry. In this womxn's only clinic, you'll learn tricks, tips, and knowledge that will empower you in the backcountry, as well as improve your efficiency and performance. This clinic also gives participants the opportunity to build camaraderie and ask backcountry-related questions in a female-only environment.

This clinic will be taught by Brittany Konsella, who you might know from 14er Skiiers! She has 10+ years of ski coaching experience and was the second female to ski all of Colorado's 14ers. 

While the design of this clinic is subject to skills participants wish to focus on, but objectives include:

  • Set goals for backcountry skiing/riding and develop a program to achieve those goals

  • Benefits and downfalls of women’s-specific equipment

  • Address issues surrounding how women can have a dynamic role in backcountry decision-making

  • Various tips for women in the backcountry such as how to stay hydrated and fed, efficiency techniques, layering tricks, how to take care of bodily needs, how and what to carry in your pack

  • March 7th will be an advanced women's clinic and will cover topics such as how to apply the AIARE decision making guide, how to use weather, mapping and avalanche forecasts to plan backcountry trips and effective communication in the backcountry. 

Backcountry 1 Lesson or equivalent skills are required. We'll be sending out a survey for all participants to take beforehand. You should be familiar with and know how to use your backcountry ski/snowboard gear and be comfortable skiing blue runs at the resort and/or skiing on ungroomed runs. 

All participants must have a day pass and carry snow safety gear (beacon, shovel, probe) to enter the backcountry. 

*We welcome all female (cis and trans) and non-binary skiers!
