Pass + Lesson

Ready to begin or take the next step in your backcountry education? This is the package for you.

Your package includes admission to a Backcountry 1, 2, or 3 lesson. (Backcountry 1 lessons are offered daily. If you’ll be taking a Backcountry 2 or 3 lesson, please check the calendar to make sure you’re booking on a day that it’s offered!)

Please note: All guests are required to carry a beacon, shovel and probe to leave the base area whether you are with a guide, an instructor, or on your own. Snow safety gear is available for rent if needed.

We enourage all guests to be ready and in the lesson meetup area 15 minutes before their class starts. Please allow time for checking in. If you are renting, we do recommend arriving at least 45 minutes before your lesson time.

Backcountry 1: Intro to Backcountry

This welcoming, beginner-friendly on-snow course is geared toward never-evers and folks who have only clicked into their bindings in the backcountry a handful of times. This is a half-day lesson—perfect for anyone who’s ready to jump in and learn the basics, such as:

  • How to attach your skins

  • How to run a beacon check

  • Backcountry travel basics

  • Transitioning from uphill to downhill

  • Backcountry etiquette and best practices

  • Any other questions you might have!

Backcountry 2: Movement & Skills

This full-day on-snow lesson is geared toward skiers and splitboarders who are comfortable with their touring equipment and have been skinning before. A Backcountry 1 Lesson or equivalent experience is recommended. You’ll leave this course armed with experience and knowledge on:

  • How to properly prepare for a day in the backcountry

  • Traveling efficiently across a variety of terrain

  • Techniques to improve your transitions as well as your uphill and downhill travel

Backcountry 3: Avalanche Prep

The final installment in our three-lesson on-snow Backcountry Progression is the bridge between the skills you’ve already learned and your avalanche education. Backcountry 1 and 2 lessons or equivalent experience are recommended. You’ll leave this course with:

  • More confidence on steep and tricky terrain

  • Introduction to beacon basics, route planning, human factors, and other valuable skills to set you up to get the most out of your avalanche education

  • Clear understanding of what to expect in AIARE 1 and Avy Rescue courses

**All lessons will have a 6:1 student-to-instructor ratio. We’ll do our best to match splitboarders with splitboard instructors and skiers with ski instructors.

After your lesson, you have access to Bluebird Backcountry’s 1,200 acres of unguided terrain for the rest of the day. You’re welcome to continue exploring, take a lap with your new friends, or check out the beacon park!
