Avalanche Refresher Course

You tune and wax your skis or board at the beginning of every season. Why should your avalanche knowledge be any different? Refreshing your backcountry awareness is a key skill in your repertoire, and a yearly refresher will help you practice the skills you hope you’ll never need in real life.

Avalanche Education at Bluebird Backcountry

Our Avalanche Refresher Course will help you get ready for whatever the season throws at you. We’ll practice avalanche rescue drills, dig into this season’s snowpack and what to look for while you’re out there, and review avalanche terrain and backcountry routefinding. The course includes self-paced online learning, a virtual meeting with your instructor team, and a day in the field at Bluebird Backcountry, where you’ll be part of a community that’s committed to quality education. From hiring professional educators to offering rental gear on site, everything we do is meant to build a welcoming environment where students can feel comfortable learning, building their skills, practicing with their newfound knowledge, and asking questions of experts. Plus, how many courses can boast an on-site s’more supplier?

After their courses, students say things like:

  • “Great vibe with super friendly instructors and staff… Tons of friendly people everywhere we went at Bluebird!”

  • “My avalanche instructor was patient and provided great feedback. He was knowledgeable but also clearly invested in making sure all the students had a positive experience.”

  • “I've wanted to check out the backcountry for some time, but have been nervous to go alone in potentially dangerous terrain. At Bluebird, I felt like we could try a wide range of terrain in a very safe, fun environment.”

This course is ideal for backcountry travelers who have taken an AIARE 1 or 2 course previously and want to review current practices and practice their skills. Refresher students will:

  • Discuss current snowpack factors and review snowpit techniques.

  • Review tools (online and field) for identifying avalanche terrain and route planning.

  • Practice the framework for making decisions in avalanche terrain and safe travel protocols.

  • Practice effective companion rescue.

Bluebird Backcountry is an official American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education (AIARE) provider. Our knowledgeable, experienced instructors are AIARE-trained and use the latest technology, research, and avalanche industry best practices to provide students with the most recent, relevant tools to make decisions in avalanche terrain.
