Ready to take on bigger challenges in the backcountry? This 3-day course provides avalanche and risk management knowledge, while introducing more complex situations such as leading small travel group in the backcountry, traveling in complicated terrain, and developing a travel plan that incorporates a discussion of weather, terrain, and snowpack conditions where resources are scarce. You’ll expand your knowledge of human factors, terrain management, and risk-management so that you are more prepared to make smart choices in complex terrain — and guide others to do so.

Course Prerequisites:

  • Ability to travel in avalanche terrain

  • AIARE 1 Course or equivalent Level 1 training

  • AIARE or A3 approved one-day Avalanche Rescue Course

  • One season of backcountry travel experience after the Level 1 course

You will learn:

  • How to be a leader and team player in a backcountry travel group

  • Managing travel in complicated terrain and heightened avalanche conditions

  • How to discuss and incorporate weather, terrain, and snowpack conditions into the decision-making process

  • Managing travel in more remote areas with scarce resources

  • How to analyze the snowpack in greater depth

Course Dates:
Courses take place entirely at Bluebird Backcountry, and are a mix of classroom and on-snow portions.

  • March 1-3, 2023
