AIARE Avalanche 1

Ready to begin your avalanche education journey? This three-day course is the gold standard for anyone who wants to travel in or near avalanche terrain, and there’s no better place to learn than Bluebird Backcountry. You’ll learn to identify avalanche terrain, develop a plan for traveling in avalanche terrain, effectively use a risk-management framework to make decisions in the field, and learn and practice rescue techniques. For the 21/22 season, we’re offering both traditional and hybrid course formats. Early bird price now through 8/31/21.

AIARE at Bluebird Backcountry

Begin your backcountry journey with an AIARE 1 course at Bluebird Backcountry, and you’ll finish the course with the skills, knowledge, and confidence you need to make smart decisions on your next out-of-bounds tour. Our certified instructors teach AIARE’s gold-standard curriculum—and at Bluebird, you’ll be part of a community that’s committed to quality education. From hiring professional educators to offering rental gear on site, everything we do is meant to build a welcoming environment where students are comfortable learning, building their skills, practicing with their newfound knowledge, and asking questions of experts. Plus, how many other course locations can boast on-site s’mores or live music at the end of the day?

Who Should Take this Course

AIARE 1 is a great place to begin your formal avalanche education—you don't need to have any previous avalanche training in order to take this course. 

 

However, if you’re new to the backcountry, we highly recommend starting out with Bluebird’s Backcountry 1, 2, and 3 lessons. Our staff of professional educators will guide you through the basics of gear, etiquette, and traveling uphill. With this backcountry foundation, you’ll be able to spend your AIARE 1 course focused on important avalanche and rescue topics—and confidently keep up with the rest of the students in your course.

 

Adding a Bluebird+ Membership ($250) includes all three lessons, community benefits, and takes 10% off your AIARE course costs.

 

Course Formats

This season, we offer both traditional and hybrid courses. Both course formats have a field component at Bluebird Backcountry—the difference is the classroom component. The same content is covered in both courses. 

 

TRADITIONAL COURSES take place entirely at Bluebird Backcountry over three consecutive weekdays, including the classroom portions. The following course dates are in-person: 

  • January 17–19

  • February 2–4

  • February 16–18

  • March 16–18

  • March 21–23

 

HYBRID COURSES are ideal for weekend warriors. In this format, there’s a virtual classroom portion one evening in advance of your two weekend field days at Bluebird Backcountry. The following course dates are hybrid: 

  • January 8–9 (plus Zoom classroom on January 6)

  • January 15–16 (plus Zoom classroom on January 13) 

  • January 22–23 (plus Zoom classroom on January 20)

  • January 29–30 (plus Zoom classroom on January 27)

  • February 5–6 (plus Zoom classroom on February 3) 

  • February 12–13 (plus Zoom classroom on February 10) 

  • February 19–20 (plus Zoom classroom on February 17) 

  • February 26–27 (plus Zoom classroom on February 24) 

  • March 5–6 (plus Zoom classroom on March 3)
